Once kids understand basic concepts, our app gives them the tools to explore advanced techniques and create personalized projects!

We start with the universal concepts of programming

Variables

A variable is a storage location for data that can be changed. The variable name is used to reference the storage location where the value is stored. The value can change any number of times, during the course of the program execution.

Objects

An object is an instance of a class. Most objects represent physical, real-world objects. An object can have attributes (values of variables) and methods (behaviors).

Methods

A method is a named action an object can perform. Coders must determine when a method is called and what it modifies. Objects and methods draw important parallels to real-world objects and activities.

Events

Events are a stimulus or action a computing device is constantly looking to detect. It is usually used as the trigger for behavior or state change. Events make interaction between users, devices and code real.

Control Structures

Control Structures are used to dictate which actions in a program are taken and in what order they are executed. The four basic control structures used are sequence, iteration, selection, and recursion.

Data Types

A data type is a classification that specifies what type of value a variable can hold and what type of mathematical, relational, or logical operations can be applied to it. We have three data types: numbers (floats), text (strings), and booleans (true/false).

Data Structures

A data structure is a way of organizing data so it can be accessed and modified efficiently. The two main data structures used in lists (arrays) and classes.

Game AI

Artificial Intelligence in the context of a game is used to generate responsive or intelligent behaviors in non-player characters or objects. Applications of Game AI develops advanced algorithmic and mathematical skills.

Abstraction

Abstraction is a way of controlling the level of complexity exposed to a user. Using abstraction techniques in code encourages efficiency and reusability.

Debugging

Debugging is the process of finding and resolving problems within a program. Developing these skills lays a strong foundation for logical thinking and troubleshooting.

The purpose of Runway of Hope is to raise funds 💰 for Million Dollar Smiles, a local organization that installs a playground structure in the backyard of the children facing life-threatening illnesses. The children whose medical conditions do not allow them to go to a public play park. 🇨🇦

Problem solving 🧩
Problem solving is another critical skill to cultivate. Children should be able to understand the problem, analyze and interpret what the underlying issue is and think of possible solutions to the problem. It will involve a bit of calculated guesses and testing which aids in the scientific process. -

1. Investigative skills
Children need to be able to find out things on their own. What happens when water is poured into an odd shaped container? In which conditions does water evaporate fastest? What do rabbits eat? How much air can be pumped into a football? These are some questions that children should be able to investigate on their own. Learning to code and create applications and games helps to nurture investigative skills as students will need to hypothesize, investigate and find solutions to a variety of academic and real world problems 🔎
